📋 Overview
The PAM8406 is a miniature Class D stereo audio amplifier module that punches well above its size — delivering up to 5 watts per channel from a tiny board you can hold between two fingers. It runs directly from a 5V USB supply or battery pack and includes independent volume control potentiometers for both the left and right channels, so there's no need for external volume controls in your build. Its filterless, fully differential output architecture means it drives speakers directly — no output filter capacitors or DC blocking capacitors required — saving you cost, board space, and wiring complexity.
With up to 90% efficiency, built-in short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown, the PAM8406 is an ideal amplifier stage for portable speakers, Raspberry Pi audio projects, Bluetooth speaker builds, and any DIY design that needs clean, compact stereo audio output.
⭐ Key Features
- 5W per channel output — 5W into 2Ω, 3W into 4Ω, 2W into 8Ω (all at 5V supply)
- Operates from 2.5V–5.5V — works with USB power banks, phone chargers, and Li-ion/LiPo batteries
- Up to 90% power efficiency — stays cool, extends battery life compared to Class AB designs
- Filterless Class D architecture — drives speakers directly, no output filter caps needed
- Independent left and right channel volume control potentiometers built in
- Low THD+N and high SNR for clean, high-quality audio reproduction
- Built-in short-circuit protection and thermal (over-temperature) shutdown
- Compact form factor — fits easily into portable enclosures, robots, and IoT devices
- 0.1″ (2.54 mm) pitch header pins — compatible with breadboards and perfboards

⚠️ Important Notes
⚠️ Bridged (BTL) Output — Do Not Ground Speaker Terminals: The PAM8406 uses a fully differential (bridged) speaker output. Each speaker connects across its two output pins (LOUT+ and LOUT−, or ROUT+ and ROUT−). Never connect either speaker terminal to ground — doing so will short the output and may permanently damage the module.
⚠️ Maximum Supply Voltage is 5.5V: Do not use 9V, 12V, or other higher-voltage supplies without a regulator. The IC will be permanently damaged if the supply exceeds 5.5V.
⚠️ Minimum Speaker Impedance is 2Ω: Do not connect speakers below 2Ω. This can cause excessive current draw, overheating, and damage to the module.
💡 Not for Headphone Use: The bridged differential output is not compatible with standard headphones. Connect to speakers only.
