📋 Overview
The SystemBase Multi-8U RS232 is a professional-grade USB to 8-port RS232 serial converter that instantly adds eight full-signal RS232 serial ports to any Windows or Linux computer through a single USB 2.0 connection. With communication speeds up to 921.6Kbps, ±15kV surge protection on every port, and per-port TX/RX LEDs for real-time status monitoring, the Multi-8U RS232 is built for demanding industrial and commercial serial communication environments.
Each port features a standard DB9 connector with full RS232 handshaking signals — TXD, RXD, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, RI, and GND — making it ideal for connecting legacy serial devices such as modems, barcode scanners, POS terminals, and industrial controllers. The unit is USB bus-powered and includes a latching USB connector for secure, vibration-resistant connections.

📌 DB9 Pin Assignment (RS232)
| Pin | Signal | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | DCD (Data Carrier Detect) | Input |
| 2 | RXD (Receive Data) | Input |
| 3 | TXD (Transmit Data) | Output |
| 4 | DTR (Data Terminal Ready) | Output |
| 5 | GND (Signal Ground) | — |
| 6 | DSR (Data Set Ready) | Input |
| 7 | RTS (Request to Send) | Output |
| 8 | CTS (Clear to Send) | Input |
| 9 | RI (Ring Indicator) / +5V Power | Input / Power Out |
💡 Note: Pin 9 functions as RI (Ring Indicator) by default. When an external DC adapter is connected, pin 9 delivers +5V power to connected devices instead.
🔧 Setup & Configuration
- Connect the USB cable — Plug the latching USB cable into the Multi-8U RS232 and connect the other end to an available USB port on your computer. You should hear a click when the latch engages.
- Install the driver — Windows will attempt automatic driver installation. If needed, download the latest driver from the SystemBase website and install manually. Linux users should contact SystemBase technical support at tech@sysbas.com.
- Verify COM port assignment — Open Device Manager (Windows) and confirm that 8 new COM ports appear under "Ports (COM & LPT)." You can reassign COM port numbers here if needed.
- Connect your serial devices — Attach your RS232 devices to the DB9 connectors using standard straight-through or null-modem cables as required by your device.
- Verify communication — Use the TX/RX LEDs on each port to confirm data is being transmitted and received. Open a terminal program (such as PuTTY or Tera Term) to test communication.
💡 Tip: If your serial device requires power from the converter, connect an external 5V DC adapter to the Multi-8U RS232. This enables +5V power delivery through pin 9 of each DB9 connector.

⚠️ Important Notes
- The Multi-8U RS232 model supports RS232 only. If you need RS422/RS485 ports, look for the Multi-8U Combo model.
- An external 5V DC adapter is required to supply power through pin 9 of the DB9 connectors. Without the adapter, pin 9 functions as RI (Ring Indicator).
- For Linux driver support, contact SystemBase technical support at tech@sysbas.com.
- The latching USB connector provides a secure connection — press the spring button lightly and sweep to disconnect.
- Maximum cable length for RS232 communication depends on baud rate. For best results at high speeds, keep cables under 15 meters (50 feet).
